Spotify launches 'Talk to Spotify,' a conversational AI assistant in beta for Premium users

Spotify has launched ‘Talk to Spotify,’ a conversational AI assistant in beta that lets Premium subscribers speak or type to control playback and explore music, podcasts and audiobooks. The company announced the feature on July 14, 2026.

The assistant works across the app’s Home and Now Playing screens on mobile, and it holds context across follow-up requests. A user can ask it to ‘play some artists I haven’t heard before,’ then narrow that to ‘just his recent stuff’ without restating the artist, the kind of back-and-forth that separates an assistant from a search box.

Beyond picking tracks, the assistant can answer questions about artists, songs, podcasts and audiobooks, and surface details from a listener’s own history. Spotify said it runs on a mix of its in-house AI technology and models from several outside providers, chosen by task, though it did not name the vendors.

Availability is deliberately narrow. The beta is rolling out gradually to Premium users 18 and older in the United States, Ireland and Sweden, on iOS and Android, in English only, a small footprint for a company that has repeatedly tested AI features on subsets of subscribers before wider release.

The launch pushes Spotify further into the conversational-AI race, where a chat layer is fast becoming standard for consumer apps. The open question is whether talking to Spotify actually beats tapping through playlists for most listeners, or whether it becomes another AI feature that demos well and goes unused once the novelty fades.
