OpenAI, WAN-IFRA and AIRPPU announce AI program for Ukrainian newsrooms

OpenAI, WAN-IFRA and the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU) announced an artificial intelligence program for independent Ukrainian news publishers on September 7. It combines newsroom training with support for editorial, commercial and operational projects.

Ten selected news organizations are due to begin a 12-week accelerator on September 17. Every organization in the broader program will also receive OpenAI API credits to develop custom newsroom tools, according to the partners. The published materials do not disclose the credits’ amount, monetary value, expiration terms or usage limits.

The initiative is split into two tracks. Newsroom AI covers editorial projects selected by AIRPPU; Business Transformation focuses on commercial and operational projects. The partners say the program is intended to strengthen the sustainability, efficiency and resilience of independent journalism. The opened official materials do not report results or an independent evaluation.

The first phase was a six-part webinar series open to 40 independent local and regional Ukrainian newsrooms. WAN-IFRA’s program page dates the series from August 5 through August 28, before the joint announcement. Topics included editorial workflows, audience engagement, product development, revenue generation, organizational change and responsible AI adoption.

WAN-IFRA schedules the Newsroom AI Catalyst Accelerator from September 17 through December 15. The hybrid program is set to open with an in-person kickoff in Paris, followed by remote group modules and one-to-one mentoring. WAN-IFRA expects each participant to develop an AI workflow or prototype and an implementation roadmap, then present the projects at a virtual showcase.

AIRPPU chief executive Oksana Brovko said the association believes AI can strengthen editorial workflows, improve efficiency and help publishers better serve audiences. Her statement reflects a program partner’s expectation, not a measured outcome.

The Ukrainian newsroom initiative is separate from OpenAI’s Daybreak Cyber Partner Program, another partnership effort covered by DataPhoenix.

The joint WAN-IFRA announcement does not name the 10 accelerator participants or disclose the program budget, selection criteria or newsroom-level allocation of support.
