OpenAI shuts down standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser, folds it into desktop app

OpenAI is shutting down its standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser on August 9, 2026, folding the experiment’s agentic-browsing features into the unified ChatGPT desktop app and a new Chrome extension. The shutdown comes less than a year after launch.

Atlas launched on Mac in October 2025. OpenAI announced the deprecation on July 9, 2026, alongside the unified desktop app and its GPT-5.6 model family. “The current targeted date for deprecation is 8/9, and we’ll share more information in the upcoming days both in-app and via email,” James Sun of OpenAI said in the company’s help-center notice.

The move matters because it retires a distinct app most users never installed and pushes its capabilities into software they already run. After the cutoff, Atlas may no longer open, browse or support browser-based agentic workflows — the setup in which the assistant navigates and acts on web pages on a user’s behalf. OpenAI told users to export bookmarks and saved pages beforehand.

The capabilities are not disappearing. Atlas’s agentic browsing moves into the new ChatGPT desktop app, which merges ChatGPT, the Codex coding tool and a built-in browser, plus a separate cloud browser that runs agent tasks on OpenAI’s servers. A new ChatGPT extension for Chrome can read the page a user is viewing, answer questions about it and summarize its content.

The consolidation trades a dedicated browser for a browser presence inside apps and an extension, which reaches Chrome’s much larger installed base but drops the standalone product. Whether that widens adoption of OpenAI’s agentic browsing or simply reduces surface area will show up in how aggressively the company promotes the desktop app and extension after Atlas goes dark.
