Chinese AI lab Moonshot has reportedly secured access to roughly 20,000 Nvidia chips through a deal involving Alibaba Cloud, a computing arrangement that Alibaba disputes and that adds fuel to the US-China chip-export fight.

The chips are said to be from Nvidia’s earlier Hopper generation, in the H200 class, and to account for a significant share of the compute behind Moonshot’s Kimi model line, according to reporting published July 31, 2026.

Alibaba rejected the specific allegation. A company spokesperson said the alleged supply of H200 chips to Moonshot “is completely groundless.”

The dispute matters because of what Moonshot has built with that compute. Its Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter model unveiled earlier in July 2026 and billed as the largest open-weight AI system, reportedly outperformed Alibaba’s own Qwen models on key benchmarks despite comparable training resources. A parameter is a numerical weight a model adjusts during training; more parameters generally mean a larger, costlier system.

The report lands atop an active policy fight. A White House official alleged in July 2026 that Moonshot had accessed Nvidia chips subject to US export restrictions, which bar sales of the most capable accelerators to China.

None of the sourcing has been independently confirmed, and the benchmark comparisons rest on figures not verified outside the report.
