Lam Research said on Aug. 13 it will invest more than $3 billion over five years to expand its global research-and-development lab network, aiming to raise experimental and testing capacity by more than 50%.
The semiconductor-equipment maker is spending to keep its tools abreast of chipmaking’s rising complexity. Chief Executive Tim Archer said AI-era chips demand new architectures, materials and nanoscale-precision features, and that developing them requires far more lab capacity to run experiments, the company said.
Lam Research builds the etch and deposition machines that chipmakers such as TSMC and Samsung use to pattern wafers, so its lab capacity sets how fast it can qualify processes for the next generation of AI accelerators and high-bandwidth memory. More testing space, in the company’s framing, means more experiments run in parallel and faster iteration.
The $3 billion figure is a five-year commitment, not immediate spending, and Lam Research did not break out how much lands in which year or at which sites. The company also did not detail how the expansion translates into specific new products.
Whether the added lab capacity shows up as faster tool releases, or simply larger R&D budgets, will show over the next few years as AI chipmakers push toward smaller, more complex designs.
