AWS announced new capabilities for Amazon Q Developer and a GitLab Duo integration
This Tuesday at re:Invent 2024, AWS announced it will expand Amazon Q Developer's capabilities. The AI-powered assistant can now assist developers in generating documentation and automating code reviews and unit test creation. The company also announced a new GitLab integration.
AWS' AI coding assistant Amazon Q Developer has come a long way since it was first announced in last year's AWS re:Invent. Generally available since April, Amazon Q Developer leverages AI agents to generate code based on existing code and comments or a text-based prompt, create recommendations based on the contents of private repositories, and contribute to automating the upgrade process for legacy Java applications.
This Tuesday at re:Invent 2024, AWS announced it will further expand Amazon Q Developer's capabilities. The AI-powered assistant will now be able to generate documentation about provided codebases, perform automated code reviews, and automate the unit test generation process. To start with Amazon Q Developer's new capabilities, developers only need to install the latest Amazon Q extension for their preferred IDE and sign in to either the Free or Pro Tier.
Additionally, an integration with GitLab Duo will bring Amazon Q Developer's capabilities to GitLab. Within GitLab Duo, Amazon Q Developer can assist developers with complex workflows such as developing new features and upgrading codebases from Java 8 to 11. Amazon Q Developer can be called within GitLab through quick actions by typing /q.
