OpenAI has introduced a Data agent in ChatGPT Work that connects to a company’s approved data sources, investigates business questions and builds interactive dashboards through natural-language conversation, the company said in a Sept. 10, 2026 announcement.

OpenAI said users can direct and refine an analysis in a single conversation, without writing database queries or learning a separate analytics tool. The agent can query approved sources including Amazon Redshift, Datadog, Google BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, MongoDB and Snowflake. It can also pull files from Google Drive and SharePoint into an analysis, according to the announcement and OpenAI’s data-team product page.

OpenAI has separately expanded its work with Snowflake Cortex AI, while Snowflake is one of the Data agent’s listed connectors.

The Data agent interprets information through an organization’s own business terms, metric definitions, custom calculations and data relationships, OpenAI said. It draws on systems such as Databricks Genie Ontology, dbt, GitHub, Snowflake Horizon and existing BI dashboards. According to OpenAI, this business-context layer applies an organization’s own definitions — including how it calculates revenue or churn — instead of interpreting raw, unlabeled tables.

“Enterprise administrators choose which data connections are available and which roles can use them,” OpenAI said. Administrators can install the Data plugin and configure related data-source plugins through workspace settings, according to OpenAI’s plugin governance page. The same workspace-admin model also governs OpenAI’s Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex.

Queries run by the agent enforce the connected account’s existing permissions, OpenAI said, including table-, row- and column-level restrictions. That means the agent surfaces only data the user is already authorized to view. The company’s broader plugin policy likewise states that plugins access information users are already authorized to view.

The agent can turn an analysis into a built-in interactive dashboard that teams can edit, share and refresh, OpenAI said. It can also build or interact with dashboards in Omni, Oracle BI, Power BI, Sigma, Tableau and ThoughtSpot. OpenAI said it can recommend next steps, identify stakeholders, share findings through Slack or email, and take only actions the user approves through connected tools.

OpenAI’s published business-data policy states that inputs and outputs from ChatGPT Business and Enterprise are not used to train or improve its models by default.

Nearly all of OpenAI’s product team and more than two-thirds of its go-to-market organization already use data agents in ChatGPT Work, the company reported. That figure was supplied by OpenAI and was not independently audited.
