Microsoft Research has released Flint, an open-source intermediate visualization language that lets AI agents generate charts from compact, human-editable specifications. The project, built with the IDEAS Lab at Renmin University of China, drew a fresh wave of developer attention this week.
The idea is to sit between an agent and a rendering engine. Flint’s compiler derives chart settings automatically using more than 70 semantic field types and compiles the same specification to three back ends — Vega-Lite, ECharts or Chart.js — covering more than 30 chart types.
It ships in two parts: the flint-chart JavaScript and TypeScript library, and flint-chart-mcp, a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that lets agents create, validate and render charts directly inside a chat or coding session. MCP is the emerging standard for connecting AI agents to external tools.
Microsoft published version 0.1.1 on June 28, 2026. The repository had drawn 497 stars and 19 forks as of this report, early traction rather than production-scale adoption for a project still at a 0.1 release.
The MIT license lets developers embed it in commercial products without royalty. Whether it becomes a common layer for agent-generated charts will depend on adoption across the JavaScript charting ecosystem it targets.
