The US Department of Energy’s Genesis Open Models Initiative closes applications for its first contribution window on August 14, 2026. The deadline has drawn renewed attention to the open-weight scientific AI program, which launched last month.
Run through Argonne National Laboratory, the initiative invites universities, national labs, companies and research organizations to contribute data, research environments, evaluations and technical expertise toward open-weight scientific foundation models. The first model in the program, Genesis-Science-1, is being developed with industry partner Arcee AI.
The program and its contribution portal first went live on July 22, 2026; the August 14 cutoff is now the near-term milestone as the initial call for contributions closes.
Open-weight models let outside researchers inspect, fine-tune and reproduce results — a contrast with the closed frontier models from commercial labs. Anchoring that approach in a national lab points the effort at scientific problems rather than consumer chatbots.

The program has published its framework and named partners but has not yet released Genesis-Science-1 or detailed the compute, licensing terms or evaluation benchmarks that will define how open the resulting models are. Whether the initiative delivers usable open models — and draws contributors beyond the national-lab system — will show only after the first window closes.
